Nicholas Hlobo


NEWS: Nicholas Hlobo has a solo exhibition at the Boston ICA as part of the Momentum series, opening 30 July and running to 26 October 2008. He is included on the third Guangzhou Triennial, China (5 September - 9 November 2008). Other recent exhibitions include Flow at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2008), and Home Lands - Land Marks at Haunch of Venison, London (2008).

BIOGRAPHY
Nicholas Hlobo was born in Cape Town in 1975, and has a B Tech degree from the Wits Technikon (2002). He has an affinity for non-traditional materials, with rubber inner tubes, leather, ribbons, soap and found objects making frequent appearances in works which explore Xhosa traditions, homosexuality and 'anything that people find embarrassing in society'. He was the winner of the Tollman Award for the Visual Arts 2006. In 2007 he had solo shows at Extraspazio in Rome and the Pei Ling Chan Gallery, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia, and was the invited artist for the Aardklop festival in Potchefstroom. Recent group exhibitions include Cape '07, Cape Town (2007); Olvida Quien Soy - Erase me from who I am at the Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno in Las Palmas (2006); Second to None at the Iziko South African National Gallery (2006); Take me to the river at Pretoria Art Museum (2005); A Decade of Democracy: Witnessing South Africa at the Museum of the National Center for Afro-American Artists, Boston, and other venues (2004-5); and Inventors, makers and movers at Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam (2005). He took up a two-month Ampersand Foundation residency in New York in 2007, and spent three months in residence at the Thami Mnyele Foundation studios in Amsterdam in 2005. Full CV
