BIOGRAPHY
Poynton's paintings have been acclaimed for their alluring imagery and accomplished technique. Although her work is rich in references to the tradition of realist painting, it is also explicitly contemporary. Whether her subject is a beach scene, a family group or an interior, her paintings contain subtexts that reflect contradictions between the human condition and societal expectations; between inner and outer realities. Poynton was born in 1970 in Durban and her youth was spent between South Africa, Britain, Swaziland and the USA. She studied at Rhode Island School of Design for two years then returned to South Africa to paint full-time. She has held solo shows with Michael Stevenson in February 2003, September 2004 and January 2006. Recent group exhibitions include New Painting (KZNSA Gallery, Durban; Unisa Art Gallery, Pretoria; Johannesburg Art Gallery; 2006) and What Lies Beneath at Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen (2006).
