Kevin Brand
eleven a side
15 September - 23 October 2004
This installation is inspired by the popular game of table-soccer
with its twenty-two figures that swivel on rotating bars. Each team
comprises four sculptures of single players, two two-figure pieces
and one three-figure piece. The appearance of the sculptures recalls
the mass-produced forms of the table-soccer figures: imprisoned,
stiff and in rigid poses. They also relate stylistically to the West
African figurative tradition and its rich responses to contemporary
culture. Brand has ensured that the surfaces of these bronze figures
retain the texture of the carving process.
eleven a side is the third body of work in which Brand has
used a
group of male figures as a sculptural device. In 1988 he exhibited
19
boys running (which was acquired by the South African National
Gallery), and in 1995 he produced HERE XVII. In both these
series the
pedestals, plinths or bases were an integral element of the
installation, which is also the case with eleven a side.
