Ledochowski studied at Michaelis, majoring in photography, before joining the Afriapix photographic collective and Afroscope, its film and video component, in the early 1980s. Apart from documenting the ongoing struggles and strife in the communities on the Cape Flats, he has also documented the formation and development of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and related worker organizations within the Western Cape. While photographing in the townships he also accepted portrait commissions, which he hand coloured for his subjects. His long-standing experience and relationship with these communities drew him into recording their various cultures, which culminated in the publication of Cape Flats details: art and life in the townships of Cape Town. A selection of these images were exhibited at our gallery in June 2003 as well as in the exhibition, The structure of survival at the Biennale di Venezia.

These prints are from an ongoing project that explores the economy of rural Pondoland which revolves around the subsistence crop of maize and the cash crop of dagga.
