19.   A stick with a European figure wearing jacket and tie

This stick came from the collection of Nicholaas Meyer (1904-1995) who, after majoring in Zulu at the University of Witwatersrand, joined the Civil Service in 1927 and was posted to the Native Affairs Department in Johannesburg. He worked in various similar positions until 1947 when he was appointed manager of Native Affairs for the Kimberley City Council and retired in 1969 as Director of Bantu Administration and Development. He donated his collection of Africana and decorative arts to the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley in 1989. See also no.28.
