31.   A figure of a man in European dress holding his top hat

South-east Africa

(late nineteenth century)

height: 47cm

The carver of this figure conveys the man's awkwardness with European dress through distortion of the proportions as well as with his facial expression. The angularity of this carver's style bears some resemblance to that of the carver of the stick with a baboon figure no.30.
