62.   A panel depicting a 'Gold Coast Chief visits the London Zoo'

Ghana

(circa 1920s)

27.5 x 45.5cm

The occasion of the visit has not been identified but may have been at the time of the British Empire exhibition in London in 1924 when a West African village was constructed and sixty West Africans came to Britain to partake in the exhibition. This panel may even have been made by a West African carver working in situ at the exhibition where many colonies constructed stands with people replicating local trades.
