reinforced fibre resin, 400 x 30cm
Jeremy Wafer’s sculptures are austere celebrations of traditional
African forms and topography. However, he resists providing direct
links to these sources and instead views his works as distillations
of varied references to decorative elements of utilitarian forms,
objects of adornment and patterns from nature and the landscape. The
calm yet assertive presence of these unusually large new sculptures
is characteristic of Wafer’s contemplative and considered aesthetic.
The colour and textures of the surfaces will vary from cast to cast
but will range from pale cream through to dark red, Wafer’s
distinctive earthen hues. These particular works can be laid on the
ground, or mounted horizontally or vertically on a wall.
Approximately six resin casts will be made, each slightly different.
