Shiftboss with 'his piccanin', underground at Randfontein Estates Gold Mine. For the shiftboss the young man carried measuring instruments, a bottle of tea and a 'pneumo' jacket; for me - at the shiftboss's insistence and over my objections - he carried my tripod.
