David Katz and his brother and sister lived and kept shop in Calitzdorp for most of their lives. The brothers were bachelors. The sister had married long before and gone to live in Cape Town. However within a year her husb had died and she back and cared for her brothers. Among themselves they usually spoke Afrikaans. Their father was a dealer in ostrich feathers. His surname was Cohen but he changed it to Katz. No one knew why.
