Owendale Asbestos Mine closed in 1984. Its then owners left large quantities of highly carcinogenic asbestos waste exposed to wind and people. One small fragment of this fibre inhaled by a susceptible person can cause the always fatal cancer, mesothelioma, which has a latency period of up to 50 years.
