Swerwers, nomadic farmworkers and skilled sheep shearers, trekking through the Karoo on the N1. Probably descended from the San and the Khoi who freely roamed these parts before the coming of Whites, the swerwers, like their ancestors, have developed nomadism into a way of life. But the swerwers do not live off the land so much as its public roads and the spaces between roads and farm fences. Near Colesberg, Northern Cape. 27 August 1986
