Flat lidded vessel with handle in the form of an elephant

height: 23cm, length: 46cm, width: 31,5cm

Stylistically this horizontal dish and cover - with its highly abstracted elephant form - would appear to by the same carver as the example given to R Bertrand by King Lewanika in 1893, illustrated in his book, The kingdom of the Barotse, 1899, p137. This reproduction is possibly the earliest illustrated record of this type of lidded bowl. There is also a very similar bowl, probably by the same carver, in the American Museum of Natural History which they acquired in 1907 (illustrated in R Sieber, African furniture and household objects, New York, 1980, p193).
