Deborah Poynton's paintings have been acclaimed for their alluring imagery and accomplished technique. Although her work is rich in references to the tradition of realist painting, it is also explicitly contemporary. She constructs her images around personal and universal themes, and using colour, light and composition to create meaning and mood. Anonymous crowds, her own family, landscapes and objects appear in her work which question societal norms and serve as metaphors of internal states of mind or. Her paintings of everyday life puzzle and provoke the viewer to ask questions for which there are no obvious answers. They are challenging images confronting the reality of about what it is to be a person living in our times.
